Day 1: Short Inca Trail: From Cusco to Wiñay Wayna

Our day begins with an early transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, where we board the train, the starting point of our hike. From there, we set off on a steady four-hour ascent, visiting first the ruins of Chachabamba and then the impressive terraces of Wiñay Wayna, both nestled within the lush cloud forest.

After this climb, we continue onward to Inti Punku, the Gate of the Sun, where we are rewarded with the first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu—a truly unforgettable moment that makes every step worthwhile. Finally, we descend to the town of Aguas Calientes, nestled at the foot of the mountain, where we spend the night and rest up for the grand exploration that awaits us the following day.

Day 2: Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

We start the day early with a bus ride from Aguas Calientes up to Machu Picchu, where a private guide will lead us through the sanctuary for two hours, unveiling the history and secrets of this wondrous citadel. After the guided tour, we enjoy some free time to wander on our own, soak in the atmosphere, and capture those last unforgettable views.

In the afternoon, we board the train back to Ollantaytambo, retracing our journey through the Sacred Valley. From there, a final transfer takes us to Cusco, bringing our adventure to a close with hearts full of memories and a deep sense of wonder.

What’s the best time to visit Peru?

That depends a lot on what you’re hoping to see. If you’re coming for Machu Picchu or the Andes in general, most people prefer the dry season like May through September because the weather’s more stable and there’s less rain. It’s also when everything’s in full swing.

But to be honest, the rainy season isn’t terrible either. Sure, you might get wet, but the mountains are super green and it’s less crowded. Some travelers love that kind of atmosphere.

So yeah, it really comes down to your style. Some like clear skies and others don’t mind a bit of mud if it means having the place more to themselves.

Do I need to book my tour in advance?

We always recommend it. Some spots like Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail can fill up weeks or even months ahead, especially during high season. If you wait until the last minute, there’s a chance you might miss out or have fewer options.
