ITINERARY AT A GLANCE

Palcoyo Mountain is considered the second Rainbow Mountain, due to its beautiful valleys and colorful mountain range. It is highly visited by tourists who love nature and does not require much physical effort; the route is accessible, and after just a few minutes of walking, we can enjoy the beautiful valleys visible on the horizon.

We begin the day with pick-up from the hotel and head to the village of Cusipata for breakfast. Then, we travel for approximately 2 hours in our transport. Along the way, we will see locals herding their llamas and alpacas, as well as engaging in agricultural work, with native potato cultivation being predominant. This charming landscape will accompany us along the route until we reach the start of the hike.

After a 40-minute walk, we will reach the Tourist Viewpoint, where we will have breathtaking views of the mountains. Then, we will explore the Stone Forest, a unique rocky landscape. We will return for lunch at the restaurant and then head back to Cusco.

Day 1: Discovering the colorful area of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain.

We will start your day by picking you up from your hotel, ready to explore one of Cusco's new rainbow mountains!
We will drive for almost 3 hours to Cusipata. Once we arrive, we'll stop for a delightful breakfast at a local restaurant. Energized and fueled up, our journey continues, for about 2 hours and 30 minutes until we reach the trek's starting point.

Our first part of the trek will take 40 minutes, leading us to the inspiring Tourist Viewpoint. As we reach this spot, a spectacular scenario of the Palcoyo Mountain will amaze us.

That 's not all! Our adventure continues as we go into the Forest of Stones. Here, nature has made a stunning landscape adorned with a collection of rocky formations. The unique shapes of these stones seem like artwork created by the earth.

After marveling at the beauty of the Stone Forest, we'll descend into the same path where our transportation will wait for us to takes us to the restaurant for lunch time!

TRAVEL ADVIDE

Walking and Exploration: A full-day tour involves extensive walking and exploring; wear comfortable shoes and a day-long adventure. Here is another tip: Do not use NEW sneakers, use the ones that make you feel comfortable.
Physical Challenge: The hike to Humantay Lake or Rainbow Mountain involves a steep path and an early start. Prepare for a moderate physical challenge. You can train in your hometown with some small hikes or walks at least 2 days per week.
Packing Guide: Refer to this packing guide LINK for specific packing suggestions considering varying conditions.

Documentation

Passport & Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Citizens of many countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, and most of Europe, do not need a visa for tourist visits to Peru for up to 90 days.
Travel Insurance: Consider travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and any high-altitude trekking activities. Is not mandatory for this trip but we EXTREMELY recommend having one.
Vaccinations: Check with your healthcare provider for recommended vaccinations before traveling to Peru, especially for high-altitude regions or the jungle, there, they recommend having yellow fever shots.

Healthcare

Physical Preparation: Some activities demand physical fitness; ensure you're adequately prepared for hikes, walks, and adventure activities. Nothing is impossible but it is important to keep practicing!
Altitude Concerns: Certain parts of the itinerary exceed altitudes where altitude sickness can be a risk. Take precautions and be aware of AMS symptoms; seeking medical advice beforehand, especially if you have pre-existing conditions, is recommended. Keep in mind the altitude changes, especially during treks and high-altitude stays; heed any guidance provided regarding altitude sickness. In case you feel it is really heavy, you can ask your doctor for some pills or just have coca tea, it always helps!
Health Precautions: Stay hydrated, especially in higher altitudes like Cusco, and be aware of the potential effects of altitude sickness. Carry any necessary medications (ask your primary care doctor), insect repellent, and a basic first-aid kit.

Is this tour right for me?

Family-Friendly: This tour offers some different activities suitable for families. The itinerary includes a variety of experiences, from cultural explorations to outdoor adventures. Since we offer day per day well distributed tours, it could suit children and whole families, just be ready for the adventure and get to know beforehand the activities we will have during this trip.
Age Suitability: Many parts of the itinerary are family-friendly, welcoming children of different ages. However, some activities, like the Humantay Lake trek or the Rainbow Mountain trek, involve moderate physical activity and might be more suitable for older children or those comfortable with hiking. In case you have babies, they are welcome too BUT remember to bring their special request and take care of them all the time.

Food and Drink

Altitude and Diet: In higher altitudes, you might find lighter meals for the first days such as chicken soup. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially in elevated areas.

Culture

Hand crafts: Always keep some cash with you to buy some souvenirs you may want. They sometimes accept cards but cash is the most popular payment method.
Tipping Culture: Tipping norms in Peru for tour guides, drivers, and other service providers are not fixed. We always recommend giving a personal appreciation but it is not a must, it is up to you.

Climate

Weather Variation: Weather across regions can differ; ensure to pack for diverse climates, especially for varying altitudes. For example, Ica y warm and dry, so summer clothes can be good. For Cusco or Machu Picchu, we never know so it is important to always pack a warm jacket and rain gear.
Seasons in Cusco: In Cusco there are two specific seasons: Rainy and Dry season. Even though there is always the possibility of having rain or sun unexpectedly. But here you can have some advice: From April to September, we have the dry season and from October until March, we have the dry season.

Communication

Language: Basic knowledge of Spanish might be helpful, but English is commonly spoken in tourist areas.
Connectivity: In cities like Lima and Cusco, you'll find good internet connectivity. However, in more remote areas, such as the mountains or while hiking, you have to be aware that we will not be connected to wifi or the internet. Expect limited or no internet access.
